Saint Mary's Summer Academy 2016

July 10-15 • July 17-22

Curiosity drives discovery at Saint Mary's Summer Academy. This residential camp is designed to introduce campers to the academic experience and thrill of college life.

Join other motivated students who are interested in academic and cultural pursuits within a specific field of study. Summer Academy offers three weeks of in-depth, hands-on study, and field trips.

July 10-15  Fashion Camp:  Draw, Design, Sew!

Students will learn the basic principles behind fashion design and construction. In the morning design labs, students will learn practice figure drawing skills, learn the elements of design, and discover how to create an interesting garment. In afternoon, students will enter the SMC costume shop to experiment with basic hand and machine sewing skills. They will gain a basic understanding of the stitching process. The class will culminate with a presentation of student-rendered designs and the construction and decoration of a simple garment, such as a wide-strap tank top. Field trips may include visits to The History Museum to view the Historic Clothing Collection, or to a local boutique to meet with a female owner for a q&a session.

Instructor: Melissa Bialko
Melissa, a graduate of the Ashland and Ohio State Universities, is happy to be teaching costume design and professional aspects for her twelfth year at Saint Mary's College. Recent costume design credits include The Glass Menagerie, Gianni Schicchi, and The Misanthrope. In her spare time, Melissa enjoys volunteering with AFS, an academic study abroad program for teens, and at The History Museum, in the historic costume collection.

July 17-22  Forensic Science Camp

Campers are summoned to a staged crime scene to participate in fact finding and evidence gathering in the hope of solving the crime. Through biology, chemistry, mathematics, and deductive reasoning, you will work with fellow campers to weigh your evidence and apply your findings in the quest for the culprit. A field trip to an actual crime lab is included in this week. You’ll share the results of your investigation in a public forum for friends and family on Friday.
